Europe 2014 Vacation Photos
I felt like it would make sense for these vacation photos to be given their own post rather than combining them with more drive-by photos. Either way, these are the kind of photos I want to get off of Flickr to make room for as many 'stours' as I can fit.
Rothenburg, Germany
Evening views of the streets.
Fountain at Night
The city wall, which you are able to walk through in many places.
As far as medieval buildings go, this one's gigantic.
These gates originally led to a castle.
Roman Ruins, Hallstatt, Austria
These now serve as the foundation for a sporting goods store.
80's Fanta Sign, Hallstatt
Spar, Salzburg, Austria
Spar is one of Europe's larger grocers, competing mainly with Aldi.
Turmöl, St. Wolfgang, Austria
I think it is pronounced "turmoil", but I doubt that was intentional. It translates to tower oil.
All the houses in Hallstatt are like this- they just started out as 1 sotry structures then started building up.
This is a pretty famous view, which I did not succeed in capturing. Fog glare is a force of evil.
Ducks, Königsee, Germany
I can't get over how clear the water is. The creek going through our yard is full of brown slime and iron precipitate, just like very other one in the state.
Red Bull World, Salzburg, Austria
I guess this is like the M&M's store in NYC, except instead of chocolate, it deals with energy drinks.
Salzburg, Austria
The picture was taken from a cliff overlooking the old part of town. The inset part of the cliff was from a failed attempt to cut through the mountain in the 1600's.
Königsee, Germany
Boats on a lake. We signed up for a tour in one of these. The guide would talk for 10 minutes in German, everyone would laugh occasionally, then he would say "The lake is 5 miles long.", then go back to making jokes in German. My advice: sign up for an English-only tour, while cheaper, the bilingual ones leave something to be desired.
The door seems to have been resized, probably whenever they ditched the boiling-oil-and-arrows security system.
Haven't seen recycling bins like these in years! I figure the different bins for different materials thing has gone out of style, as these look ancient.
Probably hasn't changed much in the last 500 years or so.
Rheinfels Hunde Bar, St. Goar, Germany
Seen outside of a fancy restaurant in a castle. It is a bar for dogs, and is stocked with various alcoholic beverages- wait a second, what?
Slate Wall
The area has a bunch of slate deposits, so pretty much every side wall of the buildings are shingled in it. It's pretty much a giant chalkboard.
Hotel, St Goar, Germany
Cool neon. I can't really think of anything else to say here, but feel the need to type something. :P
Although we only drove through it, I'm already getting the impression that Frankfurt is a weird place. The building behind this is shaped like an egg.
Airplane Bridge, Frankfurt
Just a runway crossing over the turnpike...
A view down the street. Cars can't be driven here from 6AM-8PM, so that truck is stuck there for a while.

St. Peters Restaurant, Salzburg, Austria
Outdoor seating area. I doubt it was always this fancy.
This reminded me of the Ewok forest in Star Wars.
Abandoned Factory, Germany
This was just a drive-by picture. I wish I had more time to check it out. It looks like one of those factories you see in a history book.
Update: This is now an "events venue," operating as "Wollfabrik Moselkern."
Salzburg City Wall
Castle Entrance, Bacharach, GermanyThe door seems to have been resized, probably whenever they ditched the boiling-oil-and-arrows security system.

I had my first schnitzel there. It was delicious, and not to mention, in a cool restaurant. It was all outdoors and has been in operation since the 1500's. You may have noticed I have been using this as my profile picture or "buddy icon," and now that I have posted it, I will be changing it to something new.

Zer Loveley Hotel, St Goar
Another hotel with cool neon. I'm not sure if the name is German for something or if they misspelled "lovely"...
Trolley, Frankfurt, GermanyAlthough we only drove through it, I'm already getting the impression that Frankfurt is a weird place. The building behind this is shaped like an egg.
Airplane Bridge, Frankfurt
Just a runway crossing over the turnpike...
Boat Castle, Rhein
I think this castle was intended to look like a war ship to scare off invaders. I doubt it was effective enough to be worth it.
Swiss Goats
Heidelberg Castle, GermanyA view down the street. Cars can't be driven here from 6AM-8PM, so that truck is stuck there for a while.
Straight outta Hanover, PA. I didn't even know they were sold outside of the state!
Schwan Apotheke, Heidelberg
I love that neon, that's gotta be from no later than the 50's.
Mountain Lift, Gimmewald, Switzerland

James Bond Museum, Schilthorn, Switzerland
Built in the late 1960's for the villain's lair in the James Bond film "On her Majesty's Secret Service" Has been a restaurant since then, and has recently added a museum. It slowly spins around. Piz Gloria is the name of the restaurant on top of it.
Museum in Venice
Hohenschwangau, Germany
Looking across the valley to see Neuscwanstein. I had to look up how to spell the names of these.
This was Crazy Ludwig's original castle. While it was completed, it doesn't count since he didn't build it.
I think this is a cross, but I'm not entirely sure. These were everywhere.
Glass Shop, Venice
It was nighttime, the lights were on, the door was open, but absolutely no one was in the building. Seemed pretty strange.
Church Tower, Castelrotto, Italy
This was once a large church that burned down. They built a new one about 100 feet away, and turned the tower into a seperate chapel. It's about 20 square feet inside.
Barn, Castelrotto, Italy
This area was taken from Austria after WWI. The people still haven't gotten over it. It feels even more like Austria than Austria itself. Everyone here wears lederhosen and eats schnitzel. They don't do that so much in the actual Austria.
I found a pony walking around in the middle of nowhere. It was very friendly. People who pass by must feed it.
Neuschwanstein, Germany
Museum in Venice
There was another palace across the square from the Doge's. It was on the second floor of a shopping center.

A foggy view from Castelrotto
Neuschwanstein, Germany
I think everyone has at least seen a picture of this place. It was another castle built by King Ludwig the Crazy, but this one was never completed. See the one he finished here.
This was actually built in the mid-1800's! There are houses older than that in my neighborhood.
Disney used this as inspiration for his Magic Kingdom castle. The greenhouse up there is original.
Gas Station Construction, Switzerland
Gas Station Construction, Switzerland
Sure, of course it's safe to fuel up when they are putting together the canopy above you with acetylene torches...
Venice Fish Market
Arcade at St Mark's, Venice
St. Mark's Square, Venice
Kodak, Venice
These pictures will be a bit out of order. My memory card crashed and screwed up all the pictures.
(That description aged well, everything's order got messed up even more moving them from Flickr).
Venice Fish Market
Arcade at St Mark's, Venice
I'm back!
Between not having electricity for the last couple days and school starting this Monday, it was pretty difficult to upload. Now that the schoolyear has started, uploads will be following no schedule whatsoever.
Anyways, this arcade was built onto the front of a bunch of buildings around St. Mark's square in the 1930's, giving it the appearance of one giant building. It is among the older strip malls in the world (1 vacancy as of July 2014, if anyone is interested)

Abandoned Barn, Austria
Palace, Bavaria
This was built in the late 1800's by a completely insane king, along with a couple of other palaces. This was the only one he was able to finish before going broke and disappearing.
Venice, Italy
Typical view from the Grand Canal
This was my favorite building along the canal.
Just a room going across the road. Wonder what's up there. :/
The Doge's palace in the background. We took a tour of it. My sister found it necessary to say "Wow. Such architecture" or something like that every five minutes.
Oil!, Bavaria, Germany
A sorta overly-enthusiastic gas station.
