Exton Giant 2013-14 Remodel

 3/10/2013 Pre-Remodel Visit
This is what the Giant looked like before it was (tastefully) remodeled.
 A view of one of Giant's signature towers on the left, since that was not visible in my original photo.
 Fun flooring in the greeting card aisle. At this point, it should begin to make sense why I call it the "fun house" look.
 ...as did the butcher. In later remodels, they were combined into one.
 Seafood actually got its own department at one point.
 Pharmaceuticals. I had always thought that this was redone at a later point than the rest of the store after the previous remodel, due to the general modern-ness of the area, but it all came out eventually! 😒
 neon-backlit signage. This was eliminated in the v. 2 of this décor. Knowing how quickly Giant likes to replace or remodel their stores, there probably aren't too many of these left. (I know one of the Mechanicsburg stores still has it).
Capped out at 22 aisles. You can kind of see the milk collage in back. This had the early 2000's décor (which I call the "fun house, v. 1"). Unfortunately, I did not know that this store was in jeopardy of a remodel at the time, so I did not get as many pictures as I wanted to.
 10/20/2013 The Remodel Begins
So we were eating at an excellent Mexican restaurant in the shopping center, and as we left, my mom realized that we needed milk. Walk into the store- SURPRISE!!! the "thanks! for shopping at GIANT" signage was down. Unfortunately, I missed my shot at getting some pictures because I had no idea that this was going to happen.
 This was produce and floral originally. Couldn't get a before picture here. Produce was switched out with shelves temporarily here.
 where some department between meat and seafood was (I know it wasn't Bakery, Pharmacy, or Deli) I did not get a shot of this one or the meats before the work started.
 here you see the first two aisles removed as produce was moved over.

New lighting beginning to go up.
Produce. The old lights here are still lit up.
 This used to be the wood flooring for pharmacy and the colorful greeting card aisle floor.
For some reason, these pictures are going in backwards. This is the completed façade, but the next few are when they were still working.

New meat & seafood department will be here.

Old Mercury-vapor lighting being replaced with some very generic fluorescent tubes, which were relocated from the produce department.

 Along the back, décor is complete, but they are still doing the lighting.

 the old bakery moved to where seafood used to be, and is now being removed. The pharmacy (right) will be expanding into part of it. The rest will become frozen.

 The old signage on the top of the cases has been removed. Will be replaced with molding shortly

This used to be the bakery.
New molding has been installed on top of the cases. For some reason, it uploaded the photos backwards, so you might want to start at the end. If you were wondering why I posted 41 pictures of one store today, I was in the mood for Giant and didn't feel like going through more Wyoming pictures today. That's for next week.
6/10/2014A few months after the grand reopening, I finally got a good exterior finished product photo.

Toys R Gone... But the Food's Still Whole

 It should be an easy guess what two stores we'll feature today, but as usual we've got some stuff to go through before we get there. Let's get started! Colonial Theater, Phoenixville, PA If there's one building in Phoenixville you might recognize from something other than my photos, it would be this one. And that would mean you've seen 1958's The Blob . It opened as a playhouse in 1903, and switched to film in 1928. Occasionally a new movie makes it in here, but for the most part they show classics and have concerts here now. Rec Room, Phoenixville, PA Across the street from the theater, in what I am almost certain was an old 5-and-dime (From the 80's until a couple years ago it was a variety store), Conshohocken Brewing has opened up the Rec Room. It's about what you would expect, primarily restaurant/bar space, but with a few shuffleboard and ping-pong tables in back. Indoor Tour

A lot of my posts lately have been outside looks at stores, but today I'll make it up to you. Like 75% of what I'm covering this post are store interiors. Without further ado, let's get started! Malvern Federal, Exton, PA Here's one of the more interesting bank buildings in the area. Its early history is a little complicated but I can tell you what stands today dates back at least to 1810 and was originally a farmhouse. The 1810 portion, made of stone, was added onto a log house constructed in 1771. This part may still be here, but nothing standing today obviously jumps out as a log structure so if it does still stand, it has been covered in stucco. It maintained its original use for close to 200 years, before Malvern Federal Savings bank bought the structure in 1964 and converted it to a bank. That lasted over fifty years, but then rumors began swirling that something bad was going to happen. Malvern sold the building to PREIT, who then announced plans to demolish the...

2020 Halloween Post: The American Cyanamid Labs of Princeton, NJ

 The story of how I wound up here goes all the way back to the beginning of Quarantine. Like the very beginning, where we literally weren't allowed to to be out in public on nonessential business. I, like most people, was stuck at home and bored out of my mind. To pass the time, I would find urbex sites (most of which are very stubborn about not giving out locations) and track down the buildings they featured. It was a fun challenge, almost like detective work. One site, Abandoned NJ , had a neat page on an unnamed Agricultural Research Facility. I became instantly obsessed- it was so modern but so decayed at the same time. It also had practically no clues on how to find it. It took me a few days, but ultimately I was able to track it down using a product name that appeared in one of the photos, finding the company that made that, then ultimately discovering that they still had a helipad registered at this address.
