Brookhaven, PA: January, 2017
Now that the whole Flickr disaster has been mitigated, it's time to finally start posting some fresh never-seen-before content! Are you excited? I sure am!
Amoco/BP, Brookhaven, PA
This station closed down in 2012. Despite that, the car wash continued to operate until around 2016. When that finally shut down, the canopy and pumps were finally removed. If you look closely at the sign, you can see a post-BP Amoco logo.
First Keystone/BMT, Brookhaven, PA
I'm not sure if this was built as a First Keystone, but I know they were the occupants of the building prior to Bryn Mawr Trust buying them out. The most recent streetview is from 2017, and shows this location still having the old logo. If that's still up, it might possibly be the last location to have it. I really loved the roof on this building.
CVS, Brookhaven, PA
CVS opened this location in 2001, relocating from a strip mall location elsewhere in town. It didn't open as a 24-hour store, but was made one around 2011.
MAB Paints, Brookhaven, PA
MAB was a local paint store chain that was bought out by Sherwin Williams in the late 2000's. Most locations were rebranded to Sherwin, but this location was closed in favor of an already open SW down the road.
Auto Zone, Brookhaven, PA
This was built in around 2013 onto the end of an exiting shopping center. Interestingly when they built it, they tore down one small storefront (identical to the one visible in the background; last operating as United Check Cashing) at the end. The storefront was small enough I'm surprised they didn't just tack the AutoZone onto the end of that.
Food Fair/Pantry Pride?/Save-A-Lot, Brookhaven, PA
This opened as a Food Fair in the early 50's, and became a Save-A-Lot in the early 2000's. The history in between is kinda vague, but I'm going to guess this later rebranded to Pantry Pride before closing in the 80's. It probably operated as some kind of independent store between then and SAL.
KFC & Taco Bell, Brookhaven, PA
It's hard to tell, but I see some similarities between this building and ones that were built as a KFC. Going by that, I'm gonna assume this was built as a KFC in the 90's, and remodeled/combined with Taco Bell in the early 2000's.What's strange about this is that the store doesn't have logos on the towers, but rather on the piece of wall facing the road in between.
McDonald's, Brookhaven, PA
This was among the earlier eyebrow locations. It was built in 2007, replacing an older location on the site.
Abandoned Strip Mall, Brookhaven, PA
This tiny 4-space strip mall has been vacant since before 2007. Going by the signs, one space was Carman's, which from what I can find was an appliance store. Another space was most recently a Nationwide Insurance office.
Wawa, Brookhaven, PA
This opened in the mid-60's as Wawa's third location. It relocated to a new store across the street in the late 2000's. They had some trouble selling the building apparently, since it was listed as being for sale on their website as recently as last year. It was finally off the list when I checked to write this, indicating it finally sold.
The Rita's in front appears to be a former 50's Dairy Queen.
Burger King, Brookhaven, PA
I can't tell for certain, but this appears to be an 80's location that was heavily remodeled in the 2000's.
Wawa, Brookhaven, PA
This replaced the one pictured a few photos back, and was remodeled in early 2016. I have a pre-remodel picture on this site somewhere, but I had trouble finding it. Blogger is much less search-friendly than Flickr. :P
Giant/Aldi, Brookhaven, PA
You may recall this from my 2015 coverage, this opened in 1987 and moved across the street to a newly built location in late 2016. Aldi has since taken over this location.
I noticed there was post-auction pickup going on when I drove by, so I decided to stick my head in and see what I could see.
The papered-over vestibule.
I was planning on photographing the whole thing, but I wasn't able to. I talked to the liquidators when I came in, and they said they couldn't let me walk around the store since they were stripping out the above-shelf lighting and live wires were lying around everywhere. I never mentioned taking pictures, but one of the liquidators told me I could and the other said I couldn't. I decided to err on the side of caution and not take any more than the couple I already had.
If you'll recall, they let me take home a register light. Number 6 is now the primary light in my apartment's living room. They said they would have let me take some décor too, but because of the electrical work I couldn't.
Some of the shelving's already been packed up and is ready to be shipped out to whoever bought it.
1995 Genuardi's Ad
This ad listed all the locations Genuardi's had back then. Most of these made it to the end, although a number had been replaced prior to the Safeway buyout.

Cool to see the rest of the photos from the day you got that register light! I'm still glad you were able to get that, although it's unfortunate that the work they were doing meant you couldn't get any other décor or walk around to get more photos. (Strange too that they each separately mentioned photography, without you bringing it up!)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I would have liked to see the rest of the store, but I suppose it's better that I didn't get electrocuted. XD
DeleteI'm guessing they had people come through trying to take pictures before, and just had a feelin I was there for the same thing.
You're welcome! And yeah, you're probably better off not fried XD
DeleteAh, that would make sense! Cool, if so :)
