Clemens Directory

Continuing our 5th anniversary celebration, I am adding a directory of all the former Clemens stores organized chronologically by opening year. I have almost all the stores photographed (including all but one of the final locations), but there are a few older ones I'm relying on Streetview for. I promise I'll add my own as I get them.

Lansdale (Original):

Address: 213 W. Main St.
Store number: 1
Opened: 1939
Closed: 1962
Status: Relocated in 1962, the building is currently home to Yanni's Gyro.

Lansdale (2nd- First Location):

Address: Broad and 3rd St
Store number: 13
Opened: 1940's
Closed: 1953
Status: Relocated down the street, demolished for a Gulf not long after.

Lansdale (2nd- Second Location):

Address: 1000 N Broad St.
Store number: 2
Opened: 1954
Closed: 1973
Status: This store relocated to Blue Bell in 1973, and is now home to medical offices.

Souderton (Original):

Address: 590 E Broad St
Store number: 3
Opened: 1959
Closed: 1966
Status: Full disclosure, I can't make any guarantee this is actually the store. There wasn't any address for the listing I found, but this building is certainly the right size for a Clemens of that era, and appears to have a late 60's facade, which lines up with when Clemens moved out. It's also only a block away from the replacement.

Lansdale (Original Store Relocation):

Address: 616 E Main St.
Store number: 1
Opened: 1962
Closed: 2006
Status: Sold to SuperFresh when Clemens went under, which too closed in 2009. It sat vacant for a while, but as of 2015 had become an indoor trampoline park, who all things considered didn't change much on the inside or outside.

Souderton (Replacement):

Address: 701 E. Broad St.
Store number: 3
Opened: 1966
Closed: 2006
Status: Also became a SuperFresh, which only lasted about a year. Became planet Fitness in 2009.

New Britain:

Address: 200 Town Center
Store number: 4
Opened: 1969
Closed: 2006
Status: Sold to Giant, who has yet to make any alterations to the store, inside or out.

Springhouse:

Address: 929 Sumneytown Pike
Store number: 5
Opened: 1972
Closed: 2006
Status: Sold to Giant, which closed in 2008. It sat vacant until its demolition in 2016.

Blue Bell (Original):

(Terrible photo, sorry. I promise I'll reshoot.)
Address: Rt. 202 and Skippack Pike
Store number: 2
Opened: 1973
Closed: 1990
Status: Moved here from the previously pictured one, and relocated to the other end of the center in 1990. Now a Homegoods.

Quakertown (Original):

Address: 701 S. West End Blvd.
Store number: 6
Opened: 1976
Closed: 1996
Status: Clemens moved to a new store in 1996, this became Redner's the following year.

Perkasie:

Address: 1153 N. 5th St
Store number: 7
Opened: 1978
Closed: 2006
Status: Sold to Giant, who remodeled the interior in 2013. The exterior remains untouched.

Langhorne:

Address: 250 Doublewoods Rd
Store number: 8
Opened: 1979
Closed: 2006
Status: Sold to Giant, who expanded and remodeled the store in 2011. You can catch a glimpse of the old facade here.

Lansdale (West):

Address: 2333 W. Main St.
Store number: 9
Opened: 1985
Closed: 2006
Status: Originally Ralph's Market, but was bought by Clemens. It was sold to SuperFresh in 2006, which closed in 2010. The store sat vacant until it was demolished in 2018 for a new Aldi. It was across the street from Clemens' meatpacking plant, which remains in operation.

Lionville:

Address: 168 Eagleview Blvd.
Store number: 10
Opened: 1989
Closed: 2006
Status: Sold to Giant, who remodeled in 2010 and again in 2020.

Blue Bell (Relocation):

(apologies for the low-res picture but it's the only one I could dredge up of it in the Clemens days)
Address: Rt. 202 and Skippack Pike
Store number: 2
Opened: 1990
Closed: 2006
Status: Sold to SuperFresh, closed with the chain in 2015. Became McCaffrey's in late 2016, who redid the interior.

Trappe:

Address: 130 Main St
Store number: 11
Opened: 1990
Closed: 2006
Status: Sold to SuperFresh, who closed in 2010. It was subdivided in 2016, and the signature Clemens facade removed.

Plumsteadville:

Address: 5835 Easton Rd.
Store number: 12
Opened: 1991
Closed: 2006
Status: Originally a Thriftway; sold to Giant, who gave it an interior remodel when they first moved in.

Hatfield:

Address: 1540 Cowpath Rd.
Store number: 13
Opened: Early 90's
Closed: 2004
Status: Store moved to Hilltown in 2004. Demolished not long after for a new Giant, unrelated to the Clemens buyout. To my knowledge, no street-level pictures of this store exist on the internet.

Exton:

Address: 436 W. Lincoln Highway
Store number: 14
Opened: 1994
Closed: 2004
Status: This was originally a 1991-built Shop N Bag which Clemens acquired. It closed prior to the rest of the chain, in 2004. It has since been split between HomeGoods and Marshalls.

Quakertown (Relocation):

Address: 1401 W Broad St.
Store number: 6
Opened: 1996
Closed: 2006
Status: Replaced the older Quakertown location and sold to Giant, who remodeled the interior around 2010.

Harleysville:

Address: 611 Main St.
Store number: 15
Opened: 1997
Closed: 2006
Status: Sold to Giant, who remodeled in 2015.

Conshohocken:

Address:
Store number: 16
Opened: 1997
Closed: 2006
Status: Originally 50's Penn Fruit, which became a Shop N Bag in 1974. Sold to Giant, who remodeled both the interior and exterior in 2011.

New Hope:

Address: 322 W Bridge St.
Store number: 17
Opened: 1999
Closed: 2006
Status: Originally Thriftway (owned by the same people who still have the adjacent True Value Hardware). Sold to SuperFresh, which closed with the chain in 2015. It is now a gym.

Frazer:

Address: 225 Lancaster Ave
Store number: 18
Opened: 2000
Closed: 2006
Status: Formerly Shop N Bag, sold to Giant. Has yet to be remodeled.

Abington:

Address: 1411 Old York Rd.
Store number: 19
Opened: 2002
Closed: 2006
Status: Originally a Food Fair/Pantry Pride, which became a Thriftway in 1979. Sold to Giant, but closed in 2011. It later became Sports Authority, and is now a Michaels.

North Coventry:

Address: 186 Glocker Way
Store number: 20
Opened: 2003
Closed: 2006
Status: Sold to Giant, has yet to be remodeled. Note the Clemens "Gatherings" sign survived until 2018.

Westtown:

(Bottom photo is a screenshot from Bam Margera's show)
Address: 1502 West Chester Pike
Store number: 21
Opened: 2003
Closed: 2006
Status: Originally SuperFresh (but built for A&P). Sold to Giant, who demolished and rebuilt the store in 2017.

Hilltown:

Address: 1591 Bethlehem Pike
Store number: 13
Opened: 2004
Closed: 2007
Status: This was originally a Super G, which Clemens moved into right after they closed from their Hatfield store. Since it was not bought by anybody, it held on until 2007. After sitting vacant for a few years, it became a Burlington.

Clemens also ran a 3-store gourmet chain called Foodsource, which I've photographed.

Bryn Mawr:

Address: 663 Lancaster Ave
Opened: 1999
Closed: 2011
Status: Giant assumed ownership of the Foodsource stores and continued to operate them for a while. This was the last one to close, in 2011. It became a CHOP clinic in 2017.

Greenville (DE):

Address: 3801 Kennett Pike
Opened: Early 2000's
Closed: 2007
Status: This store was the only time Clemens set foot out-of-state, and when Giant bought it was the only time they had been in Delaware. It didn't last long, they closed in 2007, and it became Janssen's Market shortly afterward.

Glen Mills:

Address: 925 Baltimore Pike
Opened: 2003
Closed: 2007
Status: Originally Zagara's (Genuardis' version of Foodsource), which Clemens acquired when the division was divested. Giant closed this in 2007, and it was split among Fresh Market and a few smaller clothing stores.

Comments

  1. This was great to read! I was originally hired part-time at the Plumsteadville location in 1997 during college. I also went to the newer Quakertown location to help out in produce for a week. I went full-time in 2003 at New Hope. After New Hope, I worked at Perkasie, Ralph's Corner (briefly), Springhouse, and finally went to New Britain. I quit just before the sale to Giant/C&S. So many good memories.
